Abstract
Acoustic signals generated by drilling a bore hole with a drill bit are received at sensors placed in the drill string. The acoustic signals received by the sensors are processed, e.g. using a Fourier transform, and a characteristic of the acoustic signals is used to identify lithology, rock strength, presence of oil, presence of gas, change in lithology, or the like.
Claims26
A method comprising:
- drilling a wellbore into a first type of rock using a drill bit;
- sensing acoustic energy generated by the drill bit drilling into the first type of rock;
- and
- identifying the first type of rock based, at least in part, on a characteristic of the acoustic energy.
1 more element
An apparatus comprising:
- a sensor to receive acoustic energy generated by a drill bit drilling into rock;
- and
- a processing system configured to analyze the acoustic energy and determine a property associated with the rock based, at least in part, on a characteristic of the acoustic energy.
A system comprising:
- a drill bit to drill into rock;
- and
- a downhole assembly coupled to the drill bit, said downhole assembly comprising:
- one or more sensors to receive acoustic energy generated by a drilling action of the drill bit;
- and
- a processor coupled to the one or more sensors and configured to analyze the acoustic energy to determine a property associated with the rock into which the drill bit is drilling.
