Abstract
The present invention relates to a composition for the oral administration of beneficial microorganisms in a discrete dosage form, comprising about 10% to about 50% by weight of a starch component, about 25% to about 50% by weight of a sugar component, about 0-20% of a humectant component, and about 5% to about 25% by weight of water. The composition has a soft and chewy texture and water activity of about 0.60 to about 0.75.
Claims19
A composition for the oral administration of beneficial microorganisms in a discrete dosage form, said discrete dosage from comprising:
- said beneficial microorganisms included in a product at about 0.1% to about 30% by weight of product;
- the product comprising about 10% to about 50% by weight a starch component, about 25% to about 50% by weight sugar component, about 0-20% humectant, and about 5% to about 25% by weight water;
- wherein said composition has a soft and chewy texture and water activity of about 0.60 to about 0.75.
A composition for the oral administration of oils or fats in a discrete dosage form, said discrete dosage from comprising:
- said oil or fat included in a product at about 5% to about 25% by weight of product;
- the product comprising about 10% to about 50% by weight a starch component, about 10% to about 50% by weight sugar component, about 0-10% by weight humectant, about 0.01-0.5% by weight emulsifier, and about 5% to about 25% by weight water;
- wherein said composition has a hardness of about 7 to about 33 pounds and water activity of about 0.65.
A method of making a matrix and additive mixture for use in an oral administration of a fat or oil nutritional component comprising:
- a) forming a pre-emulsion of said oil or fat with an emulsifier;
- b) forming a mixture of water, starch component, sugar component and humectant;
- c) mixing the pre-emulsion with the mixture of water, starch component, sugar component, and humectant
- wherein the relative amounts of humectant and water are adjusted to control the water activity of said admixture to adjust the level of moisture in the matrix to be about 0.65, and provide a non-greasy product.
