Abstract
Methods, medium, and machines which compress, encode, enhance, transmit, decompress and display digital video images in real time. Real time compression is achieved by sub-sampling each frame of a video signal, encoding and filtering the pixel values to codes, and run-length encoding the codes. Real time transmission is achieved due to high levels of effective compression. Real time decompression is achieved by decoding and decompressing the encoded data to display high quality images.
Claims28
1-20. (canceled)
A method of compressing a stream of data representing a stream of pixels, each pixel having a corresponding illumination intensity value, the method comprising the steps of:
- a. matching the illumination intensity value representing a pixel with a current line number;
- b. determining if the current line number matches a previous line number of an immediately prior pixel;
- c. incrementing a repeat counter if the current line number matches the previous line number;
- d. encoding a repeat data structure with the repeat counter, if the current line number does not match the previous line number and the repeat counter has a value greater than zero;
- and
- e. encoding a line number data structure with the current line number if the current line number does not match the previous line number;
- wherein a compressed stream of data is formed from combinations of the line number data structure and the repeat data structure.
25-46.(canceled)
A method of compression of graphic images which make up a video stream, comprising the steps of:
- (a) selecting an image from said graphic images;
- (b) processing each pixel in a set of pixels from said image comprising the steps of:
- (i) selecting a first number of bits from each said pixel, each pixel having a corresponding illumination intensity value, wherein each pixel comprises a second number of bits and wherein said first number of bits is less than said second number of bits, said first number of bits comprising the illumination intensity value;
- (ii) selecting a line number having a third number of bits, by matching the illumination intensity value with a current line number;
- (iii) determining if the current line number matches a previous line number of an immediately prior pixel;
- (iv) if the current line number is the same as a said previous line number, incrementing a repeat counter which counts the number of sequential matching line numbers;
- (v) if the current line number is not the same as said previous line number, placing said previous line number and a current value of said repeat counter in an array of encoded data, wherein said previous line number is formatted as a line number data structure and said current repeat counter value is formatted as a repeat data structure, said data structures comprising an encoded code, and resetting the value of the repeat counter;
- (c) upon processing the last pixel in said set of pixels from said image, placing the last previous line number and the last current value of said repeat counter in said array of encoded data, whereby said array of encoded data represents said image;
- (d) outputting said array of encoded data;
- (e) selecting a subsequent image from said graphic images;
- (f) repeating steps (b) through (e) for a series of said subsequent images;
- wherein a compressed stream of video data is formed from combinations of the line number data structure and the repeat data structure.
The method of claim 25 wherein said line number indicates the number of a line in a reduced level index lookup table, said lookup table having multiple values in each line, wherein at least one of the lines in the lookup table has a different number of values than at least one other of the lines.
