Abstract
A guide wheel assembly adapted to retrofit a shopping cart having a guide wheel capable of only rotating in the intended direction of travel of the shopping cart and a flexible one piece mechanism possessing strong material memory such that constant contact between the guide wheel and a traveling surface is maintained. The guide wheel assembly is configured to allow the nesting of multiple carts.

A cart comprising:
- a frame;
- an array of swiveling wheels connected to said frame to enable movement along a traveling surface, said array being configured to define an interior wheel region, each said swiveling wheel being rotatable about an upward axis;
- a guide wheel located within said interior region, said guide wheel being restricted to rotation along a horizontal axis;
- and
- a unitary mechanism having material memory, one end of said unitary mechanism being connected to said guide wheel, an opposite end of said unitary mechanism being connected to said frame.

A shopping cart comprising:
- a frame;
- a container capable of enclosing a plurality of items connected to the top side of said frame;
- an array of casters connected to the bottom side of said frame in an arrangement such that each said caster of said array is adjacent to a corner of said frame;
- a guide wheel assembly having a guide wheel and a one piece mechanism, said guide wheel assembly defining a direction of rotation for said guide wheel, said direction of rotation being aligned with a longitudinal axis of said shopping cart;
- and
- said one piece mechanism being flexible and having material memory, one end of said mechanism being connected to said guide wheel assembly, an opposite end of said mechanism being connected to an end of said frame located perpendicular to said longitudinal axis of said shopping cart.

A guide wheel assembly for retrofit to a conventional shopping cart comprising:
- a fixed wheel capable of rotation only along a horizontal axis;
- a flexible one piece mechanism having a material memory to enable said mechanism to return to an original position after being deflected from said original position by a traveling surface of varying topography;
- said one piece mechanism having two ends, one end being connected to said fixed wheel, an opposite end connected to said shopping cart;
- and
- a means of connecting said one piece mechanism to one end of said shopping cart.
