Abstract
A method of transmitting data over a network, wherein data is transmitted in packets from a first station to a second station, data is transmitted in packets from said second station to said first station, a first data packet transmitted from said first station is modified to measure connection latency, said modified first data packet is identified by said second station and a second data packet sent from said second station to said first station is also modified, and connection latency is determined at said first station with reference to (a) the time at which said first station transmitted said first modified packet, and (b) the time at which said second modified packet was received.
Claims23
A method of transmitting data over a network, wherein
- data is transmitted in packets from a first station to a second station;
- data is transmitted in packets from said second station to said first station;
- a first data packet transmitted from said first station is modified to measure connection latency;
- said modified first data packet is identified by said second station and a second data packet sent from said second station to said first station is also modified;
- and
- connection latency is determined at said first station with reference to (a) the time at which said first station transmitted said first modified packet, and (b) the time at which said second modified packet was received.
A method according to claim 2, wherein said first modified packet and said second modified packet are modified by setting a trip delay tag.
A server configured to communicate with terminals in which packets of data are transmitted from said server to at least one of said terminals, said server including a processor and a transmitter, wherein
- said processor is configured to modify a first data packet for the purpose of determining connection latency;
- said transmitter is configured to transmit a modified first data packet to a first terminal;
- and
- said processor is configured to identify a second modified data packet received from said first terminal and to determine transmission latency with reference to (a) the time at which said first modified packet was transmitted and (b) the time at which said second modified packet was received, wherein
- said at least one terminal is configured to return a second modified packet in response to receiving a first modified packet.
A terminal configured to communicate with a server in which packets of data are transmitted between said terminal and said server, said terminal including a processor and a transmitter, wherein
- said processor is configured to modify a first data packet for the purpose of determining connection latency;
- said transmitter is configured to transmit a modified first data packet to the server;
- and
- said processor is configured to identify a second modified data packet received from said server and to determine transmission latency with reference to (a) the time at which said first modified packet was transmitted and (b) the time at which said second modified packet was received, wherein
- said server is configured to return a second modified packet in response to receiving a first modified packet.
Instructions executable by a network of computers and/or programmable data processing devices such that when executing said instructions stations connection to said network will transmit data over said network, such that
- data is transmitted in packets from a first station to a second station;
- data is transmitted in packets from said second station to said first station;
- a first data packet transmitted from said first station is modified to measure connection latency;
- said modified first data packet is identified by said second station and a second data packet sent from said second station to said first station is also modified;
- and
- connection latency is determined at said first station with reference to (a) the time at which said first station transmitted said first modified packet, and (b) the time at which said second modified packet was received.
Instructions executable by a server and mobile terminals connected to said server over a radio network, such that when executing said instructions
- data is transmitted in packets from said server to a mobile terminal;
- data is transmitted in packets from said mobile terminal to said terminal;
- a first data packet transmitted from said server is modified to measure connection latency;
- said modified first data packet is identified by said terminal and a second data packet sent from said terminal to said server is also modified;
- and
- connection latency is determined at said server with reference to (a) the time at which the server transmitted said first modified packet, and (b) the time at which said second modified packet was received by the server.
A computer readable medium having machine-readable instructions executable by a computer such that when executing said instructions a computer will perform the steps of
- modifying a first data packet for the purpose of determining connection latency;
- transmitting a modified first data packet to a first network device;
- and
- identifying a second modified data packet received from said networked device to determine transmission latency with reference to (a) the time at which said first modified packet was transmitted and (b) the time at which said second modified packet was received, wherein
- said networked device is configured to return a second modified packet in response to receiving a first modified packet.
