Abstract

A VSB communication system comprises a VSB transmission system and a VSB reception system. The VSB transmission system multiplexes a coded MPEG data and a coded supplemental data having a null sequence inserted therein, with required multiplexing information included in a field synchronization signal or in a supplemental data according to a number of the supplemental data packets being transmitted. The VSB reception system detects the required multiplexing information from the field synchronization signal or the supplemental data and decodes the multiplexed data by using the null sequence and the detected multiplexing information, as well as demultiplexes the multiplexed data into the MPEG data and the supplemental data.

A VSB communication system comprising:

a VSB transmission system for coding original supplemental data packets for first forward error correction (FEC) and enhancing the first FEC coded supplemental data packets by inserting a plurality of null bits into each packet, the VSB transmission system further multiplexing the enhanced supplemental data packets with main data packets in a data field according to a multiplexing rule and coding the multiplexed data packets for second forward error correction (FEC), the data field having a plurality of supplemental and main data segments;
and
a VSB reception system for receiving and demultiplexing the second FEC coded multiplexed data packets into the enhanced supplemental data packets and the main data packets according to multiplexing information included in the data field, the VSB reception system further processing the enhanced supplemental data packets into the original supplemental data packets.

A VSB reception system for receiving a data field comprising multiplexed main data segments and enhanced supplemental data segments, the VSB reception system comprising:

a VSB receiver for receiving the data field;
a multiplexing information detector for detecting multiplexing information from the data field, wherein the multiplexing information contains information required for demultiplexing the main data segments and the enhanced supplemental data segments from the received data field;
a demultiplexer for demultiplexing the multiplexed data field based on the detected multiplexing information into the main data segments and the enhanced supplemental data segments;
and
a supplemental data processor for processing the enhanced supplemental data segments demultiplexed from the demultiplexer to obtain original supplemental data packets.
