Abstract
A method for implementing an inductor-capacitor filter in an integrated circuit. Embodiments of the invention implement a 5-pole LC low-pass filter suitable for incorporation in wireless applications necessitating compact layouts. Inductors are formed in an IC as concentric coils on metallization layers, the concentric coils providing a negative coupling coefficient between the inductors. The invention provides programmable frequency response characteristics, enabling the transmission of high-frequency base band information while attenuating carrier RF frequencies.
Claims18
An integrated passive filter comprising:
- two inductors, each inductor including at least one coil formed between first and second nodes on one or more conductive layers of an integrated circuit;
- and
- a plurality of capacitors, wherein
- the first node of each inductor is capacitively coupled to a substrate by at least one of the plurality of capacitors,
- the second node of each inductor is electrically coupled to a common junction, and
- the coils of the two inductors are proximately located such that a current passing between the first nodes generates mutually coupled magnetic fields in the inductors.
An integrated passive filter comprising:
- a first inductor formed from concentric coils defined on parallel conductive planes;
- a second inductor formed from concentric coils defined on the parallel conductive planes, the second inductor electrically coupled in series with the first inductor;
- and
- a plurality of capacitors;
- wherein
- the first and second inductors are proximately arranged and configured to provide a mutual inductive coupling between the first and second inductors, and wherein
- each inductor includes two nodes, at least one of the two nodes being capacitively coupled to a substrate.
A method for integrating a passive filter on an integrated circuit, comprising the steps of:
- forming concentric coils on parallel metallization planes;
- electrically coupling portions of the concentric coils to form two discrete inductors each inductor having two nodes through which current enters and exits the each inductor;
- fabricating a plurality of capacitive elements, each capacitive element coupling at least one of the nodes to a substrate;
- forming a junction to which one node of each inductor is electrically coupled.
