Abstract
Elemental analysis of an earth formation is obtained using measurements from a gamma ray logging tool. From the elemental analysis, an estimate of the mineralogy of the formation is made treating the problem as one of Linear Programming (maximizing an objective function subject to equality and/or inequality constraints).
Claims33
A method of determining a composition of an earth formation, the method comprising:
- (a) estimating an elemental composition of said earth formation using a logging tool conveyed in a borehole in said earth formation;
- (b) defining a set of possible constituents in said earth formation;
- and
- (c) solving a constrained optimization problem to determine a fraction of each of said possible constituents that would give said obtained elemental composition.

An apparatus for determining a composition of an earth formation, the apparatus comprising:
- (a) a logging tool conveyed in a borehole in said earth formation;
- and
- (b) at least one processor which
- (A) processes measurements made by said logging tool and to estimate an elemental composition of said earth formation, and
- (B) using a set of possible constituents for said earth formation, solves a constrained optimization problem to determine a fraction of each of said possible constituents that would give said obtained elemental analysis.
