Abstract
A combinatorial method for discovering or optimizing materials is disclosed. The method uses solution-based components that are mixed and dispensed into regions on a substrate for drying and/or heat-treating. The drying and/or heat-treating produces materials that can be tested for a desired property.

A method for forming an array of inorganic materials, the steps of the method comprising:
- (a) providing a solid substrate characterized by a plurality of reaction regions adapted for preventing solutions from moving to adjacent regions on said substrate and having surfaces on which synthesis takes place for forming an array of different inorganic materials at known locations on said substrate;
- (b) dissolving at least two components in a solvent;
- (c) offering said components in said solvent in different concentrations for forming solutions for forming at least ten different inorganic materials;
- (d) delivering said solutions to said regions;
- and
- (e) removing solvent from said solutions to form an array of at least ten different inorganic materials for screening for a useful property.
A method employing sol-gel techniques for forming an array of inorganic materials, the steps of the method comprising:
- (a) providing a solid substrate with a plurality of regions in which synthesis can take place for forming an array of different materials;
- (b) dissolving at least two sol-gel precursor components in a liquid solvent;
- (c) forming at least ten different liquid solution mixtures, each of said liquid solution mixtures having a different ratio of said at least two components;
- (d) contacting said regions with said liquid solution mixtures;
- (e) drying said liquid solution mixtures to form an array of at least ten different gelled inorganic materials for screening for a common selected property;
- and
- (f) screening said array by at least one x-ray characterization technique selected from x-ray fluorescence or x-ray diffraction.
A method for forming an array of inorganic materials, the steps of the method comprising:
- (a) providing a solid substrate having a plurality of regions at known locations on said substrate in which synthesis can take place for forming an array of different materials, said regions being adapted for preventing solutions from moving to adjacent regions on said substrate;
- (b) providing at least two metal alkoxide components in a common liquid solvent;
- (c) forming at least eight different liquid solution mixtures, each of said liquid solution mixtures having a different ratio of said at least two alkoxide components;
- (d) depositing said liquid solution mixtures upon said regions with an automated liquid dispenser;
- (e) removing solvent from said liquid solution mixtures to form an array of at least eight different solid materials for screening for a common selected property, said screening to include a least one x-ray characterization technique selected from x-ray fluorescence or x-ray diffraction;
- and
- (f) heating said regions to a common temperature with a common heat source by heating at a first temperature in the range of about room temperature to about 120° C. for a period of about 1 to about 4 hours;
- and then heating at a second temperature in the range of about 160° C. to about 222° C. for a period of about 1 to about 4 hours.
A method for forming an array of different ceramic materials, the method comprising
- delivering a first component of ten or more different ceramic materials to each of ten or more regions of a substrate, respectively, the first component being the same for each of the ten or more ceramic materials,
- delivering a second component of the ten or more ceramic materials to the ten or more regions of the substrate, the second component being the same for each of the ten or more ceramic materials, the first and second components of the ten or more ceramic materials being delivered to the ten or more regions of the substrate in a gradient of stoichiometries as compared between regions,
- simultaneously reacting the delivered first and second components of the ten or more ceramic materials by a sol-gel process to form the ten or more ceramic materials.
