Abstract
Various embodiments for carabiners employing a pivoting gate and having a captive eye opening are disclosed. The carabiners of the present invention employ an arm laterally extending from the body of the carabiner to define a major opening and a captive eye opening within the interior of the carabiner. Some of the inventive carabiner designs provide the capability of opening the gate while the captive eye opening is maintained. Methods of fabrication and use of the carabiners are also disclosed.

A carabiner comprising:
- a generally C-shaped body having a first end region, a second end region, and an elongated section therebetween;
- a gate mounted at the second end region and being pivotable between a closed position and an open position;
- and
- an arm rotatable about the elongated section, wherein the arm avoids interference with the gate in the open position when the arm is positioned to extend laterally from a portion of the elongated section to a location at least proximate the second end region.
A carabiner comprising:
- a generally C-shaped body having a first end region, a second end region, and an elongated section therebetween;
- a gate mounted at the second end region and being pivotable between a closed position and an open position;
- and
- an arm having a female structure receiving the elongated section and laterally extending from a portion thereof to a location at least proximate the second end region defining a top opening and a bottom opening between the arm and the generally C-shaped body, wherein the arm avoids interference with the gate in the open position.
A carabiner comprising:
- a generally C-shaped body having a first end region, a second end region, and an elongated section therebetween;
- a gate mounted at the second end region and being pivotable between a closed position and an open position;
- and
- an arm rotatable about the elongated section between a first rotational position and at least a second rotational position, wherein in the first rotational position the arm extends laterally from the elongated section at most until a surface thereof lies at least proximate an interior portion of the gate opposing the elongated section.
A carabiner comprising:
- a generally C-shaped body having a first end region, a second end region, and an elongated section therebetween;
- a gate mounted at the second end region and being pivotable between a closed position and an open position;
- and
- an arm mounted at the second end region and rotatable thereabout, the arm rotatable to be situated within an interior of the generally C-shaped body to define a major opening and a captive opening with the generally C-shaped body.
A method of fabricating a carabiner comprising:
- providing a generally C-shaped body having a first end region, a second end region, and an elongated section therebetween including a reduced thickness portion;
- providing an arm having a female channel;
- inserting the reduced thickness portion of the elongated section into the female channel;
- and
- sliding the arm to a position along a length of the elongated section, wherein the dimensions of the elongated section at the position and the female channel are such that the female channel retains the elongated section.
A method of fabricating a carabiner comprising:
- providing a generally C-shaped body having a first end region, a second end region, and an elongated section therebetween;
- providing a first opposing section of an arm;
- providing a second opposing section of the arm;
- assembling the first opposing section and the second opposing section around the elongated section to form an assembled arm that is configured to laterally extend from a portion of the elongated section to a location proximate the second end region;
- and
- securing the first opposing section and the second opposing section to each other.
A method of fabricating a carabiner comprising:
- providing a generally C-shaped body having a first end region, a second end region, and an elongated section;
- providing an arm having a female channel;
- inserting the elongated section into the female channel;
- and
- securing the female channel of the arm on the elongated section, wherein the arm is configured to laterally extend from a portion of the elongated section to a location proximate the second end region.
A method of fabricating a carabiner comprising:
- providing an elongated member;
- providing an arm having a female channel;
- inserting the elongated member into the female channel of the arm;
- and
- bending the elongated member into a generally C-shaped body having an elongated section, a first end region, and a second end region positioned relative to the elongated section so that the if the arm is oriented to laterally extend from a portion of the elongated section the arm extends to a location proximate the second end region.
A method of fabricating a carabiner comprising:
- providing a generally C-shaped body having a first end region, a second end region, and an elongated section therebetween;
- attaching a gate to the second end region, the gate being pivotable between a closed position and an open position;
- and
- attaching an arm to the second end region, the arm rotatable within an interior of the generally C-shaped body to define a top opening and a bottom opening with the generally C-shaped body.
A carabiner comprising:
- a generally C-shaped body having two end regions and an elongated section therebetween;
- a gate mounted on the C-shaped body and being pivotable between a closed position and an open position;
- and
- a removable, reusable pin member extending from an access aperture of an end region of the two end regions of the C-shaped body to a cavity in the elongated section.
A carabiner comprising:
- a generally C-shaped body;
- a pivoting gate mounted on the generally C-shaped body;
- and
- a structure capable of providing a major opening and a captive eye opening defined within the generally C-shaped body while maintaining the capability of pivoting the gate.
