Performed modular trefoil and installation method

A heat exchanger for use within a rotary kiln that includes a cylindrical steel shell with an internal refractory lining, said heat exchanger comprising a first, preformed configuration and a second, installed configuration, said heat exchanger, in the first configuration, comprises at least three loose,

• preformed refractory legs, each one of the legs comprising:
• a foot located at a foot end portion of the leg,
• an inner end located opposite the foot end portion, and
• an elongate, continuous body extending between the foot and the inner end, thereby forming a single-leg unit, and
• said heat exchanger, in the second configuration, is disposed in the kiln and comprises each one of the continuous, single-leg units oriented substantially radially from proximate the shell.

A heat exchanger for use within a rotary kiln that includes a cylindrical steel shell with an internal refractory lining, said heat exchanger comprising a first configuration and a second configuration, in the first configuration, at least three loose, refractory legs each comprise:

• a foot,
• an inner end portion opposing the foot, the inner section terminating in a substantially V-shaped portion;
• and
• an elongate, continuous midsection extending between the foot and inner end portion, thereby forming a single-leg unit, the midsection having a transverse width that at its narrowest point is smaller than (i) the transverse width of the V-shaped portion and (ii) the transverse width of the foot;
• in the second configuration, each one of said legs are radially oriented from proximate the shell, and elongate metallic retainers for retaining the legs relative to the shell.

A method of installing a refractory trefoil in a rotary kiln comprising the steps of:

• a) preforming at least three legs outside of the rotary kiln of a material comprising a refractory, each one of legs comprising a foot;
• b) positioning the foot of a first one of the legs at an interior first surface of a rotary kiln wherein said first leg extends radially inwardly from said first surface;
• c) positioning the foot of a second one of the legs at an interior second surface of the rotary kiln wherein said second leg extends radially inwardly from said second surface, said second surface is circumferentially spaced apart from the first surface, wherein an interim combination comprises said first and second legs;
• and
• d) positioning the foot of a third one of the legs at an interior third surface of the rotary kiln that is circumferentially spaced apart from each one of the first and second surfaces, said third leg being inserted into said interim combination to form a hub and spoke configuration.
