System and method for providing communications services

A method of translating a telephone conversation comprising the steps of:

• providing an operator equipment;
• providing a routing system to selectively connect a call from a calling communications device to a called communications device and to the operator equipment;
• routing the call to the operator equipment and to the called communications device using the routing system to enable communications between the calling communications device, the called communications device, and an operator associated with the operator equipment;
• and
• translating at least a portion of a conversation communicated between the calling communications device and the called communications device via the operator equipment.

A machine readable medium having stored thereon a plurality of sequences of instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

• determine entry of an access number from a calling communications device for accessing an operator equipment which, in cooperation with a routing system, enables an operator to communicate with the calling communications device and a called communications device;
• issue a command for a switch to connect the call to the operator equipment;
• and
• route the call to the operator equipment using the routing system to enable communications between the operator equipment, the calling communications device and a called communications device.

A system for translating a conversation using a telecommunications network comprising:

• a routing system for receiving a call from a calling communication device;
• an operator equipment operable to enable communications between an operator and the calling communication device;
• the routing system operably coupled to the operator equipment and configured to route the call to the operator equipment under a predetermined condition to create a first connection;
• the operator equipment further operable to connect the call to a called communications device creating a second connection and enabling communications between the operator, the calling communications device and the called communications device, at least one of the first and second connections transmitting a first verbal information from the operator, the first verbal information including a translation of a second verbal information from one of the calling communications device and the called communications device to the other of the calling communications device and the called communications device.
