Abstract
This invention relates to foams made by polymerizing high internal phase emulsions (HIPE) containing polyelectrolytes. The emulsions comprise a continuous oil phase and a co- or discontinuous aqueous phase. The resulting foams are useful as a separations medium.
Claims26
A high internal phase emulsion comprising:
- a) a continuous oil phase comprising at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one photoinitiator, and
- b) a co-continuous or discontinuous aqueous phase comprising at least one of:
- 1) a polyelectrolyte having pendent ionic or ionizable functional groups, or
- 2) a polymerizable monomer having ionic or ionizable functional groups and a water-soluble photoinitiator.
