Abstract
A process for the production of catalyst coated membranes, especially catalyst coated membranes for use in fuel cells, that includes applying followed by drying of an electrocatalyst coating composition, a polymeric disopersion and a second electrocatalyst coating composition onto the surface of a temporary substrate, followed by separation of the temporary substrate.
Claims20
A process for manufacturing a catalyst coated membrane comprising:
- (a) applying at least one electrocatalyst coating composition to at least a portion of a surface of a dimensionally stable temporary support;
- (b) drying the electrocatalyst coating composition on the temporary support to form at least one first electrode on the temporary support;
- (c) applying a polymeric solution or dispersion to the at least one first electrode on the temporary support;
- (d) drying the polymeric dispersion to form a sandwich comprising a polymer membrane having a first and a second surface, at least one first electrode, and the temporary support;
- wherein the first surface of the ion exchange membrane is adjacent to the first electrode;
- (e) applying at least one electrocatalyst coating composition to at least a portion of the second surface of the polymer membrane;
- (f) drying the electrocatalyst coating composition on the polymer membrane to form a sandwich comprising the at least one second electrode, the polymer membrane, the at least one first electrode and the temporary support;
- and
- (g) removing the temporary support to form a catalyst coated membrane comprising a polymer membrane sandwiched between the at least one first and second electrodes.
