Production of sod using a soil-less sand based root medium

A transportable turf comprising:

• a porous foundation;
• a soil-less sand based root zone medium comprising sand in an amount of at least about 60% by weight, and wherein the sand has grains with a size range of from about 0.05 mm to about 1 mm;
• and
• grass having a root system;
• wherein said root system extends through said root zone medium into said porous foundation and intertwines therewithin.
