Abstract
A disk drive having a magnetic recording disk with a safe zone is described. A surface texture of the safe zone induces the head to fly at a greater height than while over data zones of the disk.
Claims46
A method of operating a disk drive, comprising:
- operating a head at a first height over a disk during at least one of a read operation or a write operation;
- and
- operating the head at a second height over the disk, wherein the second height is greater than the first height.
A magnetic recording disk, comprising:
- a first zone having a plurality of data tracks to store data;
- and
- a second zone having a surface to increase a flight height of a head greater than when the head is over the first zone.
A magnetic recording disk, comprising:
- means for storing data from a head at a flight height;
- and
- means for increasing the flight height of the head using a surface texture of the disk.
A magnetic recording disk, comprising:
- a first zone having a first surface texture on a side of the disk;
- a second zone having a second surface texture on the side of the disk;
- and
- a third zone having a third surface texture on the side of the disk, wherein the third surface texture is different from the first surface texture and the second surface texture.

A disk drive, comprising:
- a spindle assembly;
- and
- a magnetic recording disk coupled to the spindle assembly, the magnetic disk comprising:
- a first zone having a first surface texture on a side of the disk;
- a second zone having a second surface texture on the side of the disk;
- and
- a third zone having a third surface texture on the side of the disk, wherein the third surface texture is different from the first surface texture and the second surface texture.
