Abstract
The invention describes a method to eliminate instrumental offset in measurement of optically active scattering and circular dichroism. The method uses the time-average measurement of the light that is systematically transformed by a series of optical devices. The optical devises perform the function of rotating linearly polarized light, interconverting left and right circular polarized light, converting circular polarized light to rotating linear polarized light and converting linear polarized light to alternating left and right circular polarized light.
Claims15
An optical time-averaged offset cancellation device for spectrometry instruments comprising, in combination:
- a liner rotator whereby an axis of orientation of a plane of polarized light is rotated as the linear rotator rotates;
- a circularity converter whereby circular polarized light is interconverted between left and right circular polarized light and the circularity converter can be alternately inserted and removed from the light path;
- a time-averaging signal measurement electronic circuitry whereby a signal from light interacting with a detection device is analyzed in a time-average fashion.
An optical time averaged offset cancellation device as claimed in claim I in which the spectrometry instrument is an incident circular polarization Raman optical activity spectrometer.
A means for eliminating the instrumental offsets of an optical instrument comprising:
- a time-averaged measurement of light that has passed through a plurality of linear rotators and a plurality of circular converters.
A means for the balancing over a fixed interval of time the total intensity of left and right circular polarized light in a spectrometer by interconverting left and right circular polarized light at certain time intervals within the fixed time interval.
A means for the balancing in a spectrometer over a fixed interval of time linear polarized light by rotating the orientation of the linear polarized light over time whereby the time averaged intensity for all azimuthal orientations are equal.
