Abstract
A door handle assembly having a latch bolt mechanism and a retaining mechanism positioned within a housing. A shaft having a lever handle is positioned within a through hole in the latch bolt mechanism. The lever handle can be rotated in a first direction from a first position to a second position, and in a second opposite direction from the first position to a third position to provide access to an area of a door panel otherwise obstructed by the lever handle.
Claims17
A door handle assembly, comprising:
- a) a housing;
- b) a latching mechanism positioned within the housing, the latching mechanism defining a through hole;
- c) a shaft positioned within the through hole, the shaft having a first end and a second end;
- d) at least a first lever handle mounted on the first end of the shaft in a first position;
- e) wherein the first lever handle is selectively rotatable:
- i) from the first position to a second position by rotating the first lever handle in a first direction, for operation of a door;
- and
- ii) from the first position to a third position by rotating the first lever handle in a second direction opposite the first direction, for non-operation of the door.
A door for mounting within a door frame, the door comprising:
- a) a door panel having a first side and a second opposite side;
- b) a handle assembly mounted within the door panel, the handle assembly including:
- i) a retaining mechanism;
- ii) a latch bolt mechanism interconnected to the retaining mechanism;
- and
- ii) a handle extension interconnected to the latch bolt mechanism, the handle extension partially extending across an adjacent area of the door panel when the handle extension is in a first position, the handle extension being configured to rotate from the first position to a retained position away from the adjacent area to provide access to the adjacent area of the door panel.
A method of accessing an area of a door panel, the method comprising:
- a) providing a door panel having a handle assembly operably mounted to the door panel, the handle assembly being configured to rotate in a first direction from a first position to a second position to open the door panel in relation to a frame;
- b) rotating the handle assembly in a second direction opposite the first direction, from the first position to a third position;
- c) retaining the handle assembly in the third position;
- d) releasing the handle assembly while the handle assembly remains retained in the third position to access the area of the door panel that underlies the handle assembly when the handle assembly is in the first position;
- and
- e) selectively returning the handle assembly to the first position.
