A telecommunications system includes a passive optical network (PON) including an optical splitter configured to serve optical network terminations (ONTs) at respective ones of a plurality of subscriber premises. The system further includes an optical network unit (ONU) coupled to the PON and configured to provide communications for the plurality of the subscriber premises. The optical splitter may directly subtend the ONU, and the optical splitter and the ONU may be co-located, for example, at the same pole or pedestal. The ONU may be powered by a power source located at a remote terminal (RT). A composite fiber/conductor cable may couple an optical line terminal (OLT), which may be positioned at a central office (CO) or the RT, and the power source to the optical splitter and the ONU, respectively.
