Abstract
A system, apparatus, and method for determining network capacity and managing network congestion in response to a change in an end-to-end communication path between sender and receiver hosts. A receiver mobility notification is provided by the receiver host to the sender host. The sender host determines whether the receiver host has moved between networks or sub-networks using the receiver mobility notification. If the sender host determines that the receiver host has moved from one network/subnet to another network/subnet, a congestion state at the sender host is reset to correspond to the new end-to-end communication path established between the sender host and the receiver host in the new subnet.
Claims36
A method for determining network capacity and managing network congestion in response to a change in an end-to-end communication path between a sender host and a receiver host, the method comprising:
- receiving at the sender host a receiver mobility notification from the receiver host;
- determining at the sender host whether the receiver host has moved from a first subnet to a second subnet using the receiver mobility notification;
- and
- resetting a congestion state at the sender host to correspond to a new end-to-end communication path between the sender host and the receiver host in the second subnet, if the sender host determines that the receiver host has moved from the first subnet to the second subnet.
A method for determining network capacity and managing network congestion in response to a change in an end-to-end communication path between a sender host and a receiver host, the method comprising:
- determining whether the receiver host has moved from a first subnet to a second subnet, wherein the receiver host movement results in a new end-to-end communication path between the sender and receiver hosts at the transport layer;
- notifying the sender host of the receiver host's movement via a transport layer protocol;
- detecting the movement of the receiver host at the sender host using the notification;
- and
- resetting a congestion state at the sender host to accommodate the new communication path.
A host device for communicating data with at least one remote device capable of moving from a first subnet to a second subnet during communication with the host device, the host device comprising:
- a memory to store a remote subnet flag identifying a most recent state of the remote device's location known to the host device;
- a retransmission queue of non-acknowledged transport layer segments sent from the host device to the remote device, wherein a state of the remote subnet flag at the time of transmitting the transport layer segments is stored with each of the transport layer segments in the retransmission queue;
- and
- a processor configured to compare the state of the remote subnet flags of the transport layer segments with a mobility flag in each corresponding acknowledgment segment provided by the remote device, and to reset a congestion state of a communication path between the host and remote devices if the mobility flag indicates relocation of the remote device from the first subnet to the second subnet.
A system for facilitating data communication with at least one network comprising a plurality of subnets, the system comprising:
- (a) at least one sender device for transmitting transport layer segments;
- (b) at least one receiver device for receiving the transport layer segments;
- (c) wherein the sender device comprises:
- (i) a memory to store a remote subnet flag identifying a most recent state of the receiver device's location known to the sender device;
- (ii) a retransmission queue of non-acknowledged transport layer segments sent from the sender device to the receiver device, wherein a state of the remote subnet flag at the time of transmitting the transport layer segments is stored with each of the transport layer segments in the retransmission queue;
- and
- (iii) a processor configured to compare the state of the remote subnet flags of the transport layer segments with a mobility flag in each corresponding acknowledgment segment provided by the receiver device, and to reset a congestion state of a communication path between the sender and receiver devices if the mobility flag indicates relocation of the receiver device from the first subnet to the second subnet.
