Transflective display having an OLED backlight

A device comprising:

• a light modulating element;
• a first electrode disposed over the light modulating element, the first electrode comprising a transmissive material;
• a second electrode disposed over the first electrode, the second electrode comprising a reflective material;
• and
• an organic layer including an emissive material disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode;
• wherein the device does not include a substrate disposed over the light modulating element.

A device, comprising:

• a light modulating element;
• a first electrode fabricated over the light modulating element, the first electrode comprising a transmissive material;
• an organic layer including an emissive material fabricated over the first electrode;
• and
• a second electrode fabricated over the organic layer, the second electrode comprising a reflective material.

A device, comprising:

• a substrate;
• a first electrode disposed over the substrate, the first electrode comprising a reflective material;
• a second electrode disposed over the first electrode, the second electrode comprising a transmissive material;
• an organic layer including an emissive material disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode;
• a first light modulating element disposed over the second electrode;
• a second light modulating element disposed over the second electrode and in approximately the same plane as the first light modulating element;
• a third light modulating element disposed over the second electrode and in approximately the same plane as the first and second light modulating elements.
