Abstract
A system for aftertreatment of diesel engine exhaust on a vehicle which is equipped for dynamic braking, using the electrical power generated by the dynamic braking to energize a resistor bank which incinerates particulate matter which has been collected in a particulate matter filter, thereby regenerating the filter.
Claims13
A system for removing particulate matter from diesel engine exhaust, comprising:
- a filter mounted on a vehicle to receive a diesel engine exhaust stream, said filter being adapted to collect particulate matter from said diesel engine exhaust stream;
- an electrical resistance heater adapted to apply heat to said particulate filter to bum said collected particulate matter and thereby remove said particulate matter from said filter;
- and
- a regenerative braking system on said vehicle, said regenerative braking system being connected to supply electric current to said resistance heater.
1 more element
A method for lowering emissions in diesel engine exhaust, comprising:
- reducing NOx emission in the exhaust stream from a diesel engine;
- routing said exhaust stream through a filter, said filter being adapted to collect particulate matter from said diesel engine exhaust stream;
- applying heat to said particulate filter with an electrical resistance heater to bum said collected particulate matter and thereby remove said particulate matter from said filter;
- and
- supplying electric current to said resistance heater with a regenerative braking system.
