Abstract
The method of the present invention is capable of providing distributed imaging capability to a user of a computing device within a UNIX printing environment. Document creation, manipulition, editing, and output are provided by the present invention. Document design and image data are associated with the originating user. Generic access instructions cause associated document data to be retrieved or stored in accordance with the present invention. Multiple documents and output devices may be employed to accomplish the requesting needs. Further, interactive graphical printing configuration and monitoring may be utilized.
Claims28
A method for outputting data in a UNIX printing environment comprising:
- providing a client machine in a UNIX printing environment having:
- capability to interact with a UNIX system;
- and
- capability to execute a web browser, said web browser containing an extension;
- configuring a set of data at least partially obtained from said UNIX system by way of said client machine;
- identifying said set of data to be accessed in response to at least one generic access instruction;
- communicating a first web content to said client machine containing at least one generic access instruction causing at least a portion of said set of data to be accessed;
- communicating a second web content to said client machine providing capability for outputting at least said set of data;
- and
- outputting at least said set of data.
An apparatus for sharing data in a UNIX printing environment comprising:
- a client machine;
- a software extension configured to respond to at least one generic access instruction;
- a set of data at least partially obtained from a UNIX system;
- web content containing at least one generic access instruction;
- a communication apparatus;
- and
- an output device.
A method for saving an image of data posted to an output device in a UNIX printing environment, comprising:
- defining an image;
- displaying said image on a client machine in accordance with a display configuration;
- calling a print routine from a remote system for printing said image;
- saving said image as data;
- and
- executing a print job of said displayed image on said remote system.
A program for saving an image of data in a UNIX computing environment, comprising an executable function for automatically saving data sent to a printer as an image of said data.
