Abstract
The present invention is a method and system of load balancing in a group of one or more servers connected to one or more subnetworks. Two or more independent servers are bound into a group, with one of the servers elected to serve as a leader. The leader acts as a load balancer for the group while the remaining servers act as slaves. This functionality eliminates the need for one or more dedicated load balancing devices and lowers the hardware requirements necessary for performing such load balancing.
Claims24
A method for performing transparent and symmetrical load balancing in a packet-based network including a group of one or more servers and at least one router, the group has at least one joint IP address, the group of one or more servers and the routers are connected to one or more remote subnetworks in one side and to a network on the other side, wherein at least one of the remote subnetworks comprises remote clients of the group of one or more servers, said method comprising:
- spoofing the router, which is located between said group of one or more servers and the network that at least one of the remote client subnetworks is connected to the same interfaces that said group of one or more servers is connected to;
- and
- electing one server in the group as a leader of the group;
- and
- receiving a request for a new connection between at least one of the subnetworks and the network;
- and
- the leader selecting a server for said request and forwarding said request to the selected server.
A system for establishing transparent and symmetrical load balancing in a packet-based network of connection between one or more remote subnetworks and a network, the system comprising:
- one or more remote subnetworks;
- a group of one or more servers, which is an intermediate node between said remote subnetworks and the network, with one server selected as a leader and said leader operative to forward any request for new connection between said subnetworks and the network to one of the servers.
- one or more remote client of said group of one or more servers, wherein each client is connected to one of the subnetworks;
- and
- a router that is connected between said group of one or more servers and the network that is configured such that at least one remote client is connected directly to the same interface of the router that the group of one or more servers is connected.
