Abstract
A multiplexed, absorbance-based electrophoresis system for analyzing multiple samples simultaneously without use of a mask or slit comprising a light source, a planar array of capillary tubes and a detector positioned off-axis with the light source and positioned on-axis with and parallel to the planar array of capillary tubes. Other embodiments include vacuum use attached to the capillary tubes to increase the speed of detection.

A multiplexed, absorbance-based capillary electrophoresis system for analyzing multiple samples simultaneously without use of a mask or slit comprising:
- a planar array of capillary tubes;
- a photodetector for detecting light passing through the capillary tubes positioned on-axis with and parallel to the planar array of capillary tubes at a distance such that the array of capillary tubes is visible and in focus;
- and
- a light source positioned with respect to the photodetector so that the majority of light that passes between capillary tubes in the planar array of capillary tubes does not reach the photodetector.
A multiplexed, absorbance-based capillary electrophoresis system for analyzing multiple samples simultaneously without use of a mask or slit comprising:
- a planar array of capillary tubes having inlet ends and outlet ends;
- a photodetector for detecting light passing through the capillary tubes positioned on-axis with and parallel to the planar array of capillary tubes at a distance such that the array of capillary tubes is visible and in focus;
- a light source positioned with respect to the photodetector so that the majority of light that passes between capillary tubes in the planar array of capillary tubes does not reach the photodetector;
- and
- a vacuum source operatively connected to the outlet ends of the capillary tubes.

- and
- a vacuum source operatively connected to the outlet ends of the capillary tubes.
A method of analyzing multiple samples simultaneously by absorption detection comprising:
- irradiating a planar array of capillary tubes filled with samples with a light source that emits at least one wavelength of light absorbed by the samples, said capillary tubes having inlet ends and outlet ends;
- detecting absorption of light with a photodetector positioned off-axis with the light source and positioned on-axis with and parallel to the planar array of capillary tubes at a distance of at least about 10 times a cross-sectional distance of a capillary tube measured orthogonally to the planar array of multiple capillary tubes.
