Abstract
A method of producing an animal feed that is free from transmittable degenerativeencephalopathies is provided. Central to the method is alkali treatment of animalmaterial at a pH of at least 8.5 under temperature conditions below 100 C. at atmospheric pressure. This method provides a decontaminated animal feed produced under relatively low temperature and pressure conditions that are achievable instandard animal carcass rendering facilities.

A method of manufacturing an animal feed including the steps of:
- (i) adding alkali to animal material to maintain a pH of at least 5.5;
- (ii) heating the material at step (i) to a temperature in the range 55° C. to 99° C.;
- and
- (iii) dehydrating the material produced at step (ii).

A method of manufacturing a TDE-decontaminated animal feed including the steps of:
- (i) adding alkali to TDE-contaminated animal material to maintain a pH of at least 8.5;
- (ii) heating the material at step (i) to a temperature in the range 55° C. to 99° C.;
- and
- (iii) dehydrating the material produced at step (ii).
