A method of altering the reproductive capacity of a plant comprising incorporating into the genome of the plant, a recombinant polynucleotide molecule comprising a regulatory element having a MAD-box motif, operably linked to a polynucleotide molecule encoding the polypeptide PtM3 or PtM4, such that when the polynucleotide molecule is overexpressed in the plant, the reproductive capacity of the plant is altered, resulting in a characteristic including at least one of increased flowering time, increased flowering numbers, increased branching, conversion of axillary meristems to floral meristems, increased fruit production, increased nut production, increased seed output, early reproductive development, and combinations thereof compared to a control plant that is not transformed with the nucleotide sequence.
