Abstract
Near infrared imaging using elastic light scattering and tissue autofluorescence are explored for medical applications. The approach involves imaging using cross-polarized elastic light scattering and tissue autofluorescence in the Near Infra-Red (NIR) coupled with image processing and inter-image operations to differentiate human tissue components.

A diagnostic method, comprising:
- interrogating one or more tissue components with a directed electromagnetic radiation source having one or more substantially narrow predetermined wavelengths,
- detecting a scattered electromagnetic radiation and a near infrared autofluorescence emission having one or more wavelengths from said tissue components;
- and
- characterizing said detected scattered electromagnetic radiation and autofluorescence emission from said tissue components.

A diagnostic method, comprising:
- interrogating one or more tissue components with a substantially narrow band electromagnetic radiation source having one or more predetermined wavelengths of at least 500 nm,
- imaging said tissue components with a device adapted to image scattered electromagnetic radiation and a near-infrared Autofluorescence emission from said tissue components;
- and
- image processing said imaged scattered electromagnetic radiation and near-infrared Autofluorescence emission from said tissue components by a computer having an image processing software and one or more display means.

A diagnostic apparatus, comprising:
- a substantially narrow-band electromagnetic radiation source directed to illuminate one or more tissue components,
- a device adapted to record an analyzed degree of polarization near-infra red scattered electromagnetic radiation and near infrared emission from said tissue components;
- and
- a means to characterize said recorded near-infrared scattered and emission radiation from said tissue components.
