Abstract
A method and system for encoding a mark-up language document is provided, in which, the structure of the mark-up language document is condensed by removing those parts of the structure that are fixed, and by expressing the variable parts of the structure in terms of whether or how often they occur. A template that specifies which parts of the structure and fixed and which parts are variable may be provided to both the device that is transmitting the mark-up language document and the device that is receiving the mark-up language document.
Claims34
A method of encoding a mark-up language document, the block of mark-up language comprising a plurality of elements, the method comprising:
- determining which of the plurality of elements are constant in terms of how often they occur in the mark-up language document and which elements are variable in terms of how often they appear in the mark-up language document;
- and
- representing the structure of the mark-up language document using those elements that are variable in terms of how often they appear in the mark-up language document and without using those elements that are constant in terms of how often they occur in the mark-up language document.
A method of encoding a block of mark-up language text, the block comprising a plurality of elements, each element being bounded by a set of tags that indicate the type of data contained in the element, the method comprising:
- referring to a template to determine which of the plurality of elements of the block of mark-up language text have a fixed number of occurrences and which of the plurality of elements have a variable number of occurrences;
- and
- representing the structure of the block of mark-up language text with a compact block of text,
- wherein the compact block of text expresses the number of occurrences of the elements that have a variable number of occurrences, and
- wherein the compact block of text does not contain information regarding the elements that have a fixed number of occurrences.
A method for transferring a block of mark-up language from a sending computer to a receiving computer, the block of mark-up language being of a particular type, the method comprising:
- referencing a template associated with the particular type,
- wherein the template defines fixed elements, which always appear in a fixed number of instances in the block of mark-up language,
- wherein the template defines variable elements, which may or may not appear in the block of mark-up language, or may appear in a variable number of instances in the block of mark-up language;
- and
- removing from the block of mark-up language all tags that are associated with fixed elements.
A system for transferring a mark-up language document, the mark-up language having a plurality of elements, each element comprising a set of tags and at least one data item bounded by the set of tags, the system comprising:
- a sending device comprising:
- a means for determining which elements appear in the mark-up language document a fixed number of times,
- a means for removing the tags that correspond to those elements determined to appear a fixed number of times,
- a means for determining which elements of the mark-up language document appear in the mark-up language document a variable number of times,
- a means for creating a message that contains information regarding those elements that are determined to appear in the mark-up language document a variable number of times, but does not contain information regarding those elements that are determined to appear in the mark-up language document a fixed number of times;
- and
- a receiving device comprising:
- a means for receiving the message, and
- a means for recreating the mark-up language document based on the message.
