Communication system and method for sending isochronous streaming data across a synchronous network within a frame segment using a coding violation to signify invalid or empty bytes within the frame segment

A communication system, comprising:

• a transmitter configured to sample a continuous stream of data at a first rate and place a portion of the continuous stream of data within a first segment of a frame of data followed by a sequence of coding violation that indicate a lapse in the continuous stream of data and thereafter followed by another portion of the continuous stream of data;
• a transmission medium coupled to the transmitter for transmitting the frame segment at a second rate dissimilar from the first rate;
• and
• a receiver coupled to the transmission medium for forwarding to a multimedia device the portion of the continuous stream of data followed by the another portion of the continuous stream of data whereby the receiver recognizes the coding violation as containing no data or invalid data between the portion of continuous stream of data and the another portion of the continuous stream of data.

A method for transmitting data, comprising:

• sampling streaming data at a sampling rate;
• encoding the streaming data;
• and
• transmitting the streaming data across a plurality of frame segments within a corresponding plurality of frames of data interspersed with coding violations wherever the streaming data within the plurality of frame segments is absent.
