Abstract
The present invention provides a means to concentrate, dry and formulate biomaterials such as polysaccharides, gums and related biopolymers, and microorganisms such as cells, spores, and the like from dilute solutions using spent germ and other oil bearing residues. In addition, the spent germ can serve as a carrier for such biomaterials. The sorbed materials are useful in animal feeds.
Claims57
A method for drying a microbially derived polysaccharide, the method comprising:
- contacting an aqueous medium containing said polysaccharide with a sorbent, said sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue, whereby said polysaccharide and at least a portion of the water in said aqueous solution are sorbed by said sorbent thereby forming a composite;
- and
- drying said composite to a moisture content of less than 20%.
A method of obtaining a microbially derived polysaccharide comprising:
- providing a composite material that includes a sorbent containing a polysaccharide gum, sorbed therewithin;
- said composite material having a moisture content of less than 20% said sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue, and
- hydrating said composite material.
A method for drying a microorganism comprising;
- providing an aqueous medium containing said microorganism and a sorbent, said sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue;
- sorbing at least portion of said aqueous solution to thereby from a composite;
- and
- drying said composite to a moisture content of less than 20%.
A method for obtaining a microorganism, comprising:
- providing a composite material that includes a sorbent, said sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue and a microorganism, said composite having a moisture content of less than 20%;
- and
- hydrating said composite material.
A method for obtaining oil from an aqueous medium containing of an oil-producing microorganism, the method comprising:
- sorbing said microorganism in a sorbent to thereby from a composite, the sorbent comprising a spent oil-bearing residue;
- drying said composite;
- and
- obtaining oil from said composite.
