An aqueous dispersion comprising:
- A) hydrophobically coated microfine metal oxide particles;
- and
- B) at least one of the compounds of the general formula (I)

- R is an optionally branched alkyl radical having 6 to 22 carbon atoms which may or may not contain multiple bonds and may or may not contain hydroxyl groups;
- A is an ethylene radical, a propylene radical, an isopropylene radical, or a butylene radical;
- M is H, an ammonium ion or an alkali metal cation;
- a is 0 to 30;and
- b is 0 to 2.
