Abstract
A method for loaning a digital work having one or more rights associated therewith within a system having repositories configured to enforce use of the digital work in accordance with the rights. A loan right is associated with a digital work and specifies how the digital work can be loaned. If a request for the digital work is valid, use of the digital work is transferred during a loan period from a repository to the requester in accordance with the loan. Loan right data for the digital work is then updated and use of the digital work by the requestor is deactivated upon exhaustion of the loan period.

A method for loaning a digital work having one or more rights associated therewith within a system having repositories configured to enforce use of said digital work in accordance with said one or more rights, said method comprising:
- associating a loan right with a digital work, said loan right specifying how the digital work can be loaned;
- receiving from a requestor a loan request message specifying a digital work;
- determining if said request message is valid;
- transferring use of the digital work during a loan period from a repository to the requester in accordance with said loan right if said request message is valid;
- updating loan right data for the digital work;
- and
- deactivating use of the digital work by the requester upon exhaustion of the loan period.
A method for permitting use of digital works, said digital works having one or more rights associated therewith within a system having repositories configured to enable use of said digital work in accordance with said one or more rights, said method comprising:
- associating a transfer right with a digital work, said transfer right specifying that said digital work can be transferred from a first repository to a second repository;
- transferring the digital work from the first repository to the second repository in accordance with said transfer right;
- and
- in response to said transferring, step updating transfer right information in respect of said digital work.
A method for permitting use of digital works within a system comprising at least one repository configured to permit the use of said digital works in accordance with said one or more rights, said method comprising:
- associating rights with a digital work, said rights being created from a grammar, said rights specifying a manner of use indicating one or more purposes for which said digital work can be used and wherein at least one of said rights specifies a use to which an authorized requester is entitled pursuant to applicable law;
- receiving from a requester a request to access a digital work;
- processing said request to determine if access may be granted, said grant being made if said request is permitted by the rights associated with the digital work.
