Abstract
A method of film fabrication is taught that uses a coating and drying apparatus to fabricate resin films suitable for optical applications. In particular, sulfone films are prepared by simultaneous application of multiple liquid layers to a moving carrier substrate. After solvent removal, the sulfone films are peeled from the sacrificial carrier substrate. Sulfone films prepared by the current invention exhibit good dimensional stability and low birefringence.
Claims54
A coating method for forming a sulfone film comprising the steps of:
- (a) applying a liquid sulfone/solvent mixture onto a moving, discontinuous carrier substrate;
- and
- (b) drying the liquid sulfone/solvent mixture to substantially remove the solvent yielding a composite of a sulfone film adhered to the discontinuous carrier substrate, the sulfone film being releasably adhered to the discontinuous carrier substrate thereby allowing the sulfone film to be peeled from the discontinuous carrier substrate.
A composite film comprising:
- a sulfone film coated on a discontinuous carrier substrate, the sulfone film having a thickness in the range of from about 1 to about 500 μm, the sulfone film having an in-plane retardation that is less than 10 nm, the sulfone film being adhered to the carrier substrate with an adhesive strength of less than about 250 N/m.
A sulfone film comprising:
- a layer of sulfone formed by a coating operation, the sulfone film having a thickness in the range of from about 1 to about 500 μm, the sulfone film having an in-plane retardation that is less than 10 nm.
A sulfone film comprising:
- a layer of sulfone formed by a coating operation, the sulfone film having an in-plane retardation that is less than about 10 nm.
An electronic display device having view screen comprising:
- a sulfone film having an in-plane retardation that is less than about 10 nm.
A sulfone film comprising:
- a coated layer of sulfone having an in-plane retardation that is less than about 10 nm.
