Abstract
A method of film fabrication is taught that uses a coating and drying apparatus to fabricate resin films suitable for optical applications. In particular, polyvinyl butyral films are prepared by simultaneous application of multiple liquid layers to a moving carrier substrate. After solvent removal, the polyvinyl butyral films are peeled from the sacrificial carrier substrate. Polyvinyl butyral films prepared by the current invention exhibit good clarity and low birefringence.
Claims54
A coating method for forming a polyvinyl butyral film comprising the steps of:
- (a) applying a liquid polyvinyl butyral/solvent mixture onto a moving, discontinuous carrier substrate;
- and
- (b) drying the liquid polyvinyl butyral/solvent mixture to substantially remove the solvent yielding a composite of a polyvinyl butyral film adhered to the discontinuous carrier substrate, the polyvinyl butyral film being releasably adhered to the discontinuous carrier substrate thereby allowing the polyvinyl butyral film to be peeled from the discontinuous carrier substrate.
A composite film comprising:
- a polyvinyl butyral film coated on a discontinuous carrier substrate, the polyvinyl butyral film having a thickness in the range of from about 1 to about 500 μm, the polyvinyl butyral film having an in-plane retardation that is less than 10 nm, the polyvinyl butyral film being adhered to the carrier substrate with an adhesive strength of less than about 250 N/m.
A polyvinyl butyral film comprising:
- a layer of polyvinyl butyral formed by a coating operation, the polyvinyl butyral film having a thickness in the range of from about 1 to about 500 μm, the polyvinyl butyral film having an in-plane retardation that is less than 10 nm.
A polyvinyl butyral film comprising:
- a layer of polyvinyl butyral formed by a coating operation, the polyvinyl butyral film having an in-plane retardation that is less than about 10 nm.
An electronic display device having view screen comprising:
- a polyvinyl butyral film having an in-plane retardation that is less than about 10 nm.
A polyvinyl butyral film comprising:
- a coated layer of polyvinyl butyral having an in-plane retardation that is less than about 10 nm.
