Abstract
A method of treating a metal material to increase the metal's ability to adhere to other objects is provided. The metal material is prepared to receive a sol-gel solution coating. A sol-gel solution is prepared and the sol-gel solution is applied to the metal material. Subsequently, an epoxy-based adhesive coating is applied over the sol-gel solution, thereby creating an adhesive layer on the metal material.
Claims34
A method for treating a metal material, the method comprising:
- preparing a metal material to receive a sol-gel solution coating;
- preparing a sol-gel solution;
- applying the sol-gel solution to the metal material;
- and
- applying an epoxy-based adhesive coating to the applied sol-gel solution.
A method of treating a metal material for increased bond strength and durability, the method comprising:
- cleaning the metal material with at least one of an alkaline cleaner and an aqueous degreaser;
- deoxidizing the metal material with at least one of a chemical deoxidizer and a mechanical deoxidizer;
- conditioning the metal material with an alkaline solution having a caustic concentration range of about 5% to about 50%;
- applying a sol-gel coating onto the metal material;
- and
- applying an epoxy based adhesive coating over the sol-gel coating.
A metallic material, comprising:
- a metal material;
- a sol-gel coating adjacent the metal material;
- and
- an epoxy based adhesive coating adjacent the sol-gel coating.
A metallic object having increased bond strength and durability, the metallic object being formed according to a process comprising:
- preparing a metal material to receive a sol-gel solution coating;
- preparing a sol-gel solution;
- applying the sol-gel solution to the metal material;
- and
- applying an epoxy-based adhesive coating to the applied sol-gel solution.
