Abstract
Heat transfer management/compartmentalization system for a metal hydride hydrogen storage containment unit. The hydrogen storage alloy is preferably divided into compartments having a honeycomb configuration. Mass transfer hydrogen diffusion channels formed after repeated hydrogen absorption/desorption located in the compartments aid in transfer of hydrogen throughout the hydrogen storage containment unit. Heat exchanger tubing is placed through the compartments to promote heat transfer between the hydrogen storage alloy and the exterior environment.
Claims32
Apparatus for storing hydrogen storage material under pressure, said apparatus comprising:
- a pressure containment vessel defining an interior volume having a horizontal axis;
- a hydrogen storage alloy occupying at least a portion of said interior volume of said pressure containment vessel,
- a plurality of adjacent cells positioned horizontal to said horizontal axis throughout said pressure containment vessel having a cell wall, an open top, and an open bottom,
- said block operatively disposed in at least a portion of said interior volume of said pressure containment vessel and adapted to receive hydrogen storage alloy therein;
- and
- a plurality of mass transfer hydrogen diffusion channels extending parallel to said horizontal axis of said pressure containment vessel contained within each of said cells.
The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein said heat exchanger tubes extend the entire length of said pressure containment vessel.
The apparatus according to claim 29, wherein said thermally conductive metal is an aluminum alloy.
Dependencies are inferred from the claim text.
