Abstract
A subgenus of olfactory receptors (ORs) that are activated by isovaleric acid (IVA) are identified as well as assays that utilize one or more of these ORs. These assays are useful for identifying potential anti-odorants which may be used in deodorants, air and carpet fresheners, fabric deodorizers, and other compositions for camouflaging odor attributable to IVA and related carboxylic acids.

A method of identifying a compound that inhibits, blocks, enhances and/or modulates an isovaleric acid receptor by contacting an isovaleric acid receptor, or chimera, fragment or variant thereof with a specific compound and assaying whether said compound binds to said receptor, chimera, fragment or variant thereof.
A method for identifying a compound that blocks, inhibits, modulates, and/or enhances the activity of an olfactory receptor that is activated by isovaleric acid comprising:
- contacting an olfactory receptor, chimera, fragment or variant that is activatable by isovaleric acid with a compound;
- and
- determining whether said compound has an effect on the activity of said olfactory receptor.
A cell that stably expresses an isovaleric-acid olfactory receptor (IVA OR) or a variant, fragment, or chimera of said IVA or polypeptide and optionally at least one G protein.
