Abstract
A biosensor includes a substrate with a layer of receptive material disposed thereon. The receptive material is specific for an analyte of interest. A pattern of active and inactive areas of the receptive material are defined in the receptive material layer by a masking process.
Claims32
A biosensor, comprising:
- a substrate member;
- a receptive material layer generally uniformly covering a side of said substrate member, said receptive material being specific for an analyte of interest;
- a pattern of at least one active area and at least one inactive area of said receptive material defined in said receptive material layer, said receptive material in said inactive area rendered inactive by a blocking agent;
- wherein a mask having at least one shielded region and at least one exposed region is used to define said active and inactive areas in a masking process;
- and
- wherein when said biosensor is exposed to a medium containing said analyte of interest, the analyte binds to said receptive material in said active areas and facilitates subsequent diffraction of transmitted or reflective light in a diffraction pattern corresponding to said active areas.

A method of making a biosensor, comprising the steps of:
- forming a receptive material layer generally uniformly over a surface of a substrate member, the layer containing a receptive material specific for an analyte of interest;
- defining at least one active area and at least one inactive area of the receptive material in a masking process wherein a blocking agent is used to render the receptive material inactive in the defined inactive area;
- and
- wherein when the biosensor is exposed to a medium containing the analyte of interest, the analyte binds to the receptive material in the active areas and facilitates subsequent diffraction of transmitted light or reflected light in a diffraction pattern corresponding to the active areas.
