A semiconductor memory card that has a memory area comprising a plurality of sectors, data in each group of 2j sectors (j being 0 or a positive integer) being managed as a cluster, and one or more clusters being managed as a file, each group of 2i consecutive sectors in the memory area forming a block (i being 0 or a positive integer), a block being a smallest unit on which data erasure can be performed, wherein:
- the memory area includes a first area having two or more blocks, a second area, and a backup area in which attribute information of the file is recorded in units of blocks;
- a master boot record and a partition table are recorded in a first sector of a first block of the first area, then after a predetermined number of sectors are skipped, partition boot sector information, a file allocation table, and a root directory entry are recorded in subsequent sectors so that an end of the first area aligns with an end of the root directory entry.
