Abstract
A localization mechanism, or fixture, is used in conjunction with a breast coil for breast compression and for guiding a core biopsy instrument during prone stereotactic biopsy procedures in both open and closed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines. The localization fixture includes a fiducial marker and three-dimensional Cartesian positionable guide for supporting and orienting an MRI-compatible biopsy instrument with detachable probe/thumb wheel probe to the biopsy site of suspicious tissues or lesions.
Claims20
A localization apparatus for use in a medical compression apparatus for positioning a biopsy probe stereotactic biopsy procedures, comprising:
- a plate containing a plurality of apertures;
- a mounting device configured to engageably receive the biopsy probe and including alignment positioning guides to orient the biopsy probe with respect to the plate;
- and
- a biopsy instrument support oriented to support a proximal end of a biopsy instrument having a distal end engageable to the probe housing.
The localization apparatus of claim 2, further comprising:
- a fiducial marker that presents an artifact in a magnetic resonance image, the target attachable to the plate.
A localization apparatus for use in a medical compression apparatus for positioning a biopsy probe for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)-guide core biopsy procedure, comprising:
- a compression plate formed of an MRI compatible material and containing a plurality of apertures;
- a mounting device formed of an MRI compatible material and configured to engageably receive the biopsy probe and including alignment positioning guides to orient the biopsy probe with respect to the plate;
- and
- a fiducial marker coupled to the compression plate and operable to create an artifact in a MRI scan.
A breast compression assembly for a prone diagnostic imaging guided biopsy procedure, comprising:
- a chest support including an opening for allowing a patient's breast to hang;
- a medial compression plate connected to the chest support;
- a lateral compression plate connected to the chest support and opposed to the medial compression plate at a selectable spacing for fixing a patient's breast;
- a slide member perpendicularly coupled to the lateral compression plate;
- and
- a probe positioning apparatus supported by the slide member and configured to spatially guide and position a probe.
