Abstract
A bearing stave for use in a water lubricated bearing having a discontinuous surface with a plurality of discrete, separated contact locations for contacting the shaft, the discontinuous surface being made of slippery polymer alloy.
Claims28
A bearing stave for use in a water lubricated bearing, said bearing stave comprising:
- a base portion;
- and
- a discontinuous surface having a plurality of discrete, separated contact locations extending from and being unitary with said base portion for tangentially contacting a shaft;
- wherein said discontinuous surface is composed of rubber polymer alloy, and a thermoset rubber compound for adding flexibility to said bearing stave to enable said bearing stave to maintain contact with said shaft.

A bearing stave for use with an engine shaft rotating in water, said bearing stave comprising:
- a top layer having a surface for facing the shaft;
- and
- a discontinuous surface extending from the top layer towards the shaft for tangentially and multiply contacting the rotating shaft, said discontinuous surface having a plurality of discrete, separated contact locations for tangentially contacting the shaft, and being composed of rubber polymer alloy, a thermoset rubber compound for adding flexibility to said bearing stave to enable said bearing stave to maintain contact with said shaft, and a dispersed lubricant for aiding in reducing the friction between the rotating shaft and the bearing stave, said discontinuous surface having a plurality of discrete, separated contact locations for tangentially contacting the shaft to create dynamic water trapping pockets wherein water acts as a lubricant between said stave and the shaft;
- said top layer and said discontinuous surface being an integral unit.
