Segment electrophoretic displays and methods for their manufacture

A process for the manufacture of an electrophoretic display, which comprises the following steps:

• a) forming microcups in a patterned area by pattern-wise embossing a thermoplastic or thermoset material coated on a first electrode layer;
• b) filling the microcups;
• c) sealing the filled microcups;
• and
• d) laminating the sealed microcups with a second electrode layer.

A process for the manufacture of an electromagnetophoretic display, which comprises the following steps:

• a) forming microcups in a patterned area by pattern-wise embossing a thermoplastic or thermoset material coated on a substrate layer;
• b) filling the microcups;
• c) sealing the filled microcups;
• and
• d) laminating the sealed microcups with an electrode layer.

A process for the manufacture of an electrophoretic display, which comprises the following steps:

• a) forming microcups by embossing a thermoplastic or thermoset material coated on a first electrode layer;
• b) selectively filling the microcups in a patterned area with an active fluid and filling microcups in the non-patterned area with an inactive composition;
• c) sealing the filled microcups in both the patterned and non-patterned areas;
• and
• d) laminating the sealed microcups with a second electrode layer.

A process for the manufacture of an electromagnetophoretic display, which comprises the following steps:

• a) forming microcups by embossing a thermoplastic or thermoset material coated on a substrate layer;
• b) selectively filling the microcups in a patterned area with an active fluid and filling microcups in the non-patterned area with an inactive composition;
• c) sealing the filled microcups in both the patterned and non-patterned areas;
• and
• d) laminating the sealed microcups with an electrode layer.
