Abstract
A catheter system for injecting therapeutic agents including large molecules into the body. The catheter includes a distensible penetrating element with a distally locating expansion coil and a distally located chamber for holding a therapeutic agent which is to be injected into the body.
Claims10
A catheter for percutaneously delivering a set amount of a therapeutic agent from within a chamber of the heart to a target site in the heart of a patient, said catheter comprising:
- an outer catheter body having a proximal end and a distal end;
- a penetrating tubular element disposed within the distal end of the outer catheter body, said penetrating tubular element being longitudinally movable relative to the outer catheter body;
- a delivery tube running from the proximal end of the outer catheter body to the distal end of the outer catheter body and in communication with the penetrating tubular element;
- a pressure source in fluid communication with the delivery tube;
- and
- a means for triggering the pressure source operatively connected to the pressure source and to the penetrating tubular element, said means for triggering capable of triggering the pressure source to advance a set volume of fluid into the delivery tube.
A catheter for percutaneously delivering a set amount of a therapeutic agent from within a chamber of the heart to a target site in the heart of a patient at a particular time while the heart is beating, said catheter comprising:
- an outer catheter body having a proximal end and a distal end;
- a penetrating tubular element disposed within the distal end of the outer catheter body, said penetrating tubular element being longitudinally movable relative to the outer catheter body;
- a delivery tube running from the proximal end of the outer catheter body to the distal end of the outer catheter body and in communication with the penetrating tubular element;
- a pressure source in fluid communication with the delivery tube;
- a means for sensing cardiac signals;
- a control system operably connected to the pressure source and to the means for sensing cardiac signals, said control system capable of operating the pressure source to advance a set volume of fluid into the delivery tube when the control system is triggered;
- wherein the control system is triggered when the means for sensing senses a particular cardiac signal;
- whereby sensing the particular cardiac signal causes a therapeutic agent disposed within the delivery tube to be delivered to the target site.
A method of delivering a therapeutic agent through a catheter to the heart of a patient, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a catheter comprising:
- an outer catheter body having a proximal end and a distal end;
- a penetrating element disposed within the distal end of the outer catheter body, said penetrating element being longitudinally movable relative to the outer catheter body;
- a delivery tube running from the proximal end of the outer catheter body to the distal end of the outer catheter body, wherein said delivery tube is in communication with the penetrating element;
- inserting the catheter into the patient such that the penetrating element is capable of delivering the therapeutic agent to a desired location within the heart of the patient;
- delivering the therapeutic agent to the desired location;
- providing a fluid to the catheter such that the penetrating element can deliver the fluid to the desired location;
- and
- flushing therapeutic agent remaining in the delivery tube with the fluid by delivering the fluid to the desired location.
