Abstract
The optical integrated circuit includes a substrate; and, a plurality of optical elements supported by the substrate being optically coupled with each other, each optical element comprising silicon nanoclusters and having a desired opto-physical interaction with light impinging thereon. These optical elements may be, for example, optical sources, optical waveguides, optical switches and optical detectors.
Claims25
An optical integrated circuit, comprising:
- a) a substrate;
- and,
- b) a plurality of optical elements supported by said substrate being optically coupled with each other, each optical element comprising silicon nanoclusters and having a desired opto-physical interaction with light impinging thereon.
A method for forming an optical integrated circuit, comprising:
- a) forming a substrate;
- and,
- b) forming a plurality of optical elements supported by said substrate, said optical elements being optically coupled with each other, each optical element comprising silicon nanoclusters and having a desired opto-physical interaction with light impinging thereon.
An optical integrated circuit, comprising:
- a) a substrate comprising SiO2;
- and,
- b) a plurality of optical elements supported by said substrate being optically coupled with each other, each optical element comprising silicon nanoclusters and having a desired opto-physical interaction with light impinging thereon, said optical elements comprising:
- i) a laser source for receiving electrical outputs from appropriate electrically manifested information streams and generating an optical output;
- ii) a first optical waveguide for receiving said optical output and directing said optical output;
- iii) an optical switch for receiving said directed optical output and modulating one or more of the physical properties of said directed optical output;
- iv) a second waveguide for receiving the modulated optical output and re-directing said modulated optical output;
- and,
- v) an optical detector for receiving the re-directed optical output from said second waveguide and generating a corresponding electrical output.
