Abstract
An optical element, such as a waveguide or fiber ribbon, may be formed with an edge surface that reduces back reflections when light travels between optical elements butted against one another. Instead of cutting the surface at an oblique angle to the plane of the element, the surface may be cut transversely to this plane but at an angle to the optical axis, in order to facilitate the fabrication of an appropriately inclined optical interface.
Claims15
A method comprising:
- forming an optical element having an optical axis, said element lying substantially in a plane;
- and
- forming a tapered end surface by cutting said optical element at a non-perpendicular angle to said axis and substantially perpendicularly to said plane.
An optical element comprising:
- a substrate having an end surface;
- a waveguide formed in said substrate, said waveguide lying substantially in a plane of said substrate;
- and
- the end surface arranged at a non-perpendicular angle to the length of said waveguide and arranged along a plane substantially transverse to the plane of said substrate.

An optical network comprising:
- first and second abutting optical elements each having abutting surfaces;
- and
- each of said surfaces arranged at a non-perpendicular angle to the length of an optical element and arranged along a plane substantially including an optical element.
