Activation of multiple xDSL modems with implicit channel probe

A communication apparatus selectively connectable to a communication terminal, comprising:

• a transmitter that transmits a first predetermined signal to designate a specific mode to the communication terminal;
• and
• a receiver that receives a second predetermined signal from the communication terminal in response to the first predetermined signal, wherein, said first predetermined signal includes an identification field that stores modulation independent information and a standard information field that stores modulation dependent information, data in each field being hierarchically stored.

A method for establishing a communication between a plurality of communication devices, comprising:

• transmitting a first predetermined signal from a first communication device to a second communication device to designate a specific mode to the second communication device;
• and
• receiving a second predetermined signal, at the first communication device, in response to a second predetermined signal issued by the second communication device, in response to the first predetermined signal, wherein the first predetermined signal includes an identification field that stores modulation independent information and a standard information field that stores modulation dependent information.
