1. Field of the Invention

The following description of the method of the present invention will be with respect to a heterogeneous environment such as the environment 100 shown in FIG. 1. It should be understood that the present invention can be applied to other types of environments as well.
In accordance with the present invention, a mobile terminal, such as a lap top computer, a PDA or the cell phone 102 shown in FIG. 1 is modified so that it acquires network topology information in order to make triggering decisions. Since knowledge of wireless coverage area of a certain network may not necessarily guarantee wireless connectivity due to a number of factors, including multipath fading, congestion and interference, etc., there is a need for error resilience. One way of doing this is to have the mobile device always check the target network signal levels before actually making the handover to the target network.
An algorithm for an application layer triggering mechanism is shown and described in FIG. 2. As will be described below, the application layer triggering mechanism 200 determines which type of trigger is required in a certain set of circumstances and to provide the required trigger to applications.
