Abstract
The present invention relates to expression and assembly of foreign multimeric proteins—e.g., antibodies—in plants, as well as to transgenic plants that express such proteins. In one of several preferred embodiments, the generation and assembly of functional secretory antibodies in plants is disclosed. The invention also discloses compositions produced by the transgenic plants of the present invention and methods of using same.
Claims7
A method of producing a biologically functional single chain protein in a plant cell, comprising:
- a) preparing plant cells transformed with nucleotide sequence encoding a single polypeptide which comprises amino acids encoding a first and a second chain of a biologically functional heteromultimeric mammalian protein, said nucleotide sequence also encoding a leader sequence that forms a secretion signal that is cleaved following proteolytic processing, thus allowing said encoded first and second chains of said single polypeptide to assemble and form a biologically functional single chain protein;
- and
- b) processing the plant cells to obtain a preparation of the biologically functional single chain protein.
