Abstract
A genealogical research and record keeping system and method for identifying commonalities in haplotypes and other genetic characteristics of two or more individual members of a biological sample. Chromosomal fragments identical by descent identify family ties between siblings, parents and children and ancestors and progeny across many generations. It is particularly useful in corroborating and improving the accuracy of genealogical data, and identifying previously unknown genetic relationships.
Claims52
A computer-implemented system for analyzing relatedness comprising:
- an expandable database for storing a plurality of hierarchical trees;
- a first user interface for creating a plurality of data fields within at least one tree of said plurality of hierarchical trees;
- a second user interface for adding genetic data to at least one data field of said plurality of data fields;
- analytical programming for relating and alterably categorizing each data field of said plurality of data fields;
- executable programming for describing a genetic pattern for a first tree of said plurality of hierarchical trees;
- means for correlating said genetic pattern with a genetic pattern for at least a second tree of said plurality of hierarchical trees;
- and
- executable programming for predicting an antecedent genetic pattern in said first tree.
A method of identifying a possible genetic relationship among members of a species, said method comprising:
- assembling a first data set comprising genetic information from a plurality of members of a species;
- assembling a second data set comprising genealogical information from said plurality of members;
- associating said first and second data sets;
- analyzing said first and second data sets;
- and
- inferring at least one possible genetic relationship among said plurality of members.
A method of determining levels of biological relatedness in members of a species, comprising:
- identifying a plurality of members of a species;
- identifying at least one genetic marker for each of said plurality of members;
- identifying genealogical data for said plurality of members;
- creating a plurality of groups based on the at least one genetic marker;
- categorizing each member of said plurality of members into at least one group of said plurality of groups based on the degree of similarity of the at least one genetic marker for said plurality of members, such that each defined group of said at least one group has a representative genetic marker;
- and
- comparing the genealogical data within each defined group thereby inferring the level of biological relatedness of each said categorized member.
A method of determining a level of biological relatedness comprising:
- identifying a plurality of family trees;
- identifying members of said plurality of family trees;
- identifying genetic markers representative of said members;
- identifying at least one unique genetic marker for each family tree of said plurality of family trees;
- obtaining a genetic sample of a subject;
- comparing said genetic sample with said at least one unique genetic marker;
- and
- determining the level of biological relatedness of said subject with at least one family tree of said plurality of family trees based on the degree of correlation of said subject's genetic sample to said unique genetic marker.
A method of correcting a genealogical family tree, comprising:
- identifying genetic data for a plurality of individuals;
- identifying a genealogical family tree, said tree having a plurality of placeholders;
- identifying and comparing genetic data for each placeholder of said plurality of placeholders;
- placing each placeholder in a unique location within said tree based on the genetic data of each said placeholder;
- noting genetic discrepancies among said plurality of placeholders;
- designating a placeholder of said plurality of placeholders whose genetic data is outside of a genetic range as anomalous;
- comparing the genetic data of said plurality of individuals with the genetic data for each placeholder of said plurality of placeholders;
- identifying at least one individual of said plurality of individuals of said species having genetic data within said genetic range;
- inferring a member of said at least one individual having data within said genetic as being a potential placeholder;
- and
- resolving said anomalous placeholder.
A method of discovering populational origin, comprising:
- providing a database of a plurality of family trees, each family tree of said plurality of family trees having a plurality of placeholders;
- supplementing said database with genetic data for at least one placeholder of said plurality of placeholders of each said family tree thereby creating a genetic genealogy for each said family tree;
- supplementing said database with populational origin data for at least one placeholder of said plurality of placeholders of each said family tree thereby associating said at least one placeholder's family tree with at least one populational origin;
- obtaining a genetic sample;
- comparing said genetic sample with said database;
- and
- inferring populational origin of said genetic sample.
A method of determining pedigree of an animal, said method comprising:
- assembling a first data set comprising genetic information from a plurality of members of an animal population;
- assembling a second data set comprising pedigree information from said plurality of members;
- associating said first and second data sets;
- analyzing said first and second data sets;
- and
- determining at least one possible pedigreed relationship among said plurality of members.
A method of confirming pedigree, comprising:
- providing a database with a plurality of pedigree charts, each pedigree chart of said plurality of pedigree charts having a plurality of placeholders;
- supplementing said database with genetic data for at least one placeholder of said plurality of placeholders of each said pedigree chart thereby creating a genetic genealogy for each said pedigree chart;
- obtaining a genetic sample of an animal subject;
- comparing said genetic sample of said animal subject with said database;
- and
- confirming the pedigree of said animal subject.
